The financial closing of the Nakkaş-Başakşehir section of the Northern Marmara Motorway Project, one of Türkiye's highest value highway investments, was carried out by Rönesans Holding on 18 October. This project, which aims to connect the two sides of Istanbul and direct the city traffic to the Northern Marmara Motorway, will provide a new transportation alternative between Asia and Europe, as well as facilitate access to Istanbul Airport and provide safer and shorter journeys by connecting the western and northern regions.
While innovative and sustainable solutions are at the forefront of the project, the route, which covers a total of 31.3 kilometres of toll road and 1.6 kilometres of inclined suspension bridge, is equipped with advanced technologies and environmentally friendly design elements. In addition to advanced toll systems, hybrid and electric O&M vehicles will be used in this project. With the preference of LED lighting, it is aimed to save 37.5% in energy consumption and achieve an annual fuel saving of 112 thousand litres. In addition, thanks to the 2 MW capacity solar power generation system to be installed within the scope of the project, the energy needs of the operation and management centre of the motorway will be met with clean energy.
‘We are setting a new standard in transport in Turkey’
Erman Ilıcak, President of Rönesans Holding, stated that the project is a milestone in the field of transport in Türkiye and said, ‘We are proud to be setting a new standard in the field of transport in Türkiye with the Nakkaş-Başakşehir Motorway Project. We would like to thank our consortium partners led by Samsung C&T Corporation for their trust in us and their investment in Turkey throughout this project.’ Emphasising that the project was designed with sensitivity to social and environmental factors, Ilıcak expressed that they hope such projects will serve as a model for infrastructure investments in Turkey and abroad in the future.
‘It will strengthen the economic cooperation between the two countries’
Se Chul Oh, President and CEO of Samsung C&T Corporation, one of the Korea-based partners, described the project as ‘strengthening the economic cooperation between the two countries’. Stating that the project is of great importance with the technical experience offered by K-Team and the support of Korean public institutions, Se Chul Oh said, ‘We will continue to create new collaborations in Türkiye, CIS and Eastern European markets, such as the successful partnership we have established with Rönesans.’
Comprehensive sustainability goals
The project includes many environmentally friendly solutions that will save energy. Thanks to the solar power generation system and LED lamps that will save 37.5% in energy consumption, the project aims to carry out operations in a sustainable framework. In addition, the use of hybrid and electric vehicles along the motorway will save 112 thousand litres of fuel annually. Within the scope of the project designed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, a total of 7.9 million tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions will be prevented in 30 years, while particulate matter emissions will be reduced by 1,399 tonnes, nitrogen oxides by 58,699 tonnes and sulphur dioxide by 95 tonnes.
