In a recent announcement, Türkiye's Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Abdulkadir Uraloğlu provided significant updates on the much-anticipated second border crossing bridge set to be constructed between the Ipsala and Kipi border gates. This strategic infrastructure project, which is nearing the completion of its preparatory phase, marks a crucial step forward in enhancing connectivity and fostering stronger bilateral relations between Türkiye and Greece.
Minister Uraloğlu emphasized that the project works are rapidly approaching completion, with the construction tender slated to be launched in 2024. The new bridge, which will span the Evros River, is poised to significantly bolster Türkiye's functional connection along the Thessaloniki - Sofia - Berlin route. This route is a vital corridor for trade and transportation, and the new bridge is expected to facilitate smoother and more efficient transit of goods and people between the two nations and beyond.
Designed as a 4-lane, 841-meter-long extradose bridge, this modern structure is set to be a remarkable feat of engineering. The extradose bridge design, known for combining the benefits of both girder and cable-stayed bridge designs, will ensure both durability and aesthetic appeal.
Minister Uraloğlu highlighted the strategic importance of the new bridge in his statements, underlining how it will strengthen Türkiye's connectivity to key European cities along the Thessaloniki - Sofia - Berlin route. This enhanced connectivity is expected to stimulate economic growth, not only by facilitating more efficient transportation of goods but also by fostering increased tourism and cultural exchange between Türkiye and Greece. The new bridge will complement the existing infrastructure, providing an alternative route that can help alleviate congestion and reduce transit times at the border.
The project has garnered significant attention and support from both Turkish and Greek authorities, as well as from various stakeholders involved in the regional transportation and logistics sectors. The successful completion of this bridge is anticipated to serve as a symbol of cooperation and partnership between Turkey and Greece, showcasing the positive outcomes that can be achieved through collaborative efforts in infrastructure development.
