Yapı Merkezi, one of Türkiye's leading construction companies, signed a contract with the Government of Uganda for the Malaba-Kampala East Line Railway Project, which is of strategic importance in Uganda. The ceremony held on 14 October was attended by Mehmet Fatih Ak, Ambassador of the Republic of Türkiye to Kampala, Erdem Arıoğlu, Deputy Chairman of the Board of Yapı Merkezi İnşaat, Mustafa Kopuz, General Manager of Yapı Merkezi İnşaat and F. Mert Öz, Uganda Projects Coordinator. The value of the project is 3 billion dollars and its total length is planned as 273 kilometres.
A Fully Electrified Modern Railway Line
Designed according to European and American standards, the Malaba-Kampala East Line Railway will be fully electrified and have a standard span structure. Within the scope of the project, there will be two major stations, four medium stations, one Marshaling Yard and three freight terminals on the line with a design speed of 120 km/h. The line will connect Uganda with Kenya and will have an annual freight capacity of 25 million tonnes. Yapı Merkezi aims to create an important transport corridor for both Uganda and East Africa by offering the most advanced solutions in the engineering and construction process of the project.
‘We Represent Our Country Successfully’
Erdem Arıoğlu, Deputy Chairman of the Board of Directors of Yapı Merkezi Construction, emphasised their pride in the project in his speech at the ceremony. ‘We are very proud to undertake the Eastern Line Railway Project, which will connect Uganda to Kenya. As Yapı Merkezi, we have achieved success by offering the most appropriate engineering solutions for this important project by using our vast knowledge in railway engineering. We are very happy to represent our country successfully abroad.’
Uganda Transport Minister: ‘It Will Increase Economic Integration’
Uganda's Minister of Transport, General Katumba Wamala, described the project as an important initiative in the country's transport history. Wamala said, ‘We are proud to collaborate with Yapı Merkezi on this project, which will increase regional trade and economic integration by connecting Uganda and Kenya. We believe that Yapı Merkezi will successfully complete the project on time.’
On 8 November 2022, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed with Yapı Merkezi and the project proposal was submitted to the Ugandan Ministry of Transport in July 2023. After the negotiations completed as of June 2024, the Offer Acceptance Letter was received on 24 September 2024.
Strategic Connections for East Africa
The Malaba-Kampala Railway will connect Kampala, the capital of Uganda, to Kenya's Mombasa Port on the Indian Ocean. With the completion of this line, when the planned Kampala-Kasasa (West Line) Project in Uganda is also realised, the Democratic Republic of Congo will also have railway access to the Port of Mombasa, creating a strong trade corridor in East Africa.
Project to Reduce High Transport Costs
This project, which will offer an economic solution to the country, which is faced with high transport costs due to Uganda's lack of a coastline, is also of great importance in terms of commercial benefit. The line, the construction of which is expected to start this year, will strengthen Uganda's foreign trade links and accelerate regional development.
With this project, Yapı Merkezi will reinforce its role in projects of high strategic importance in East Africa, while making an infrastructure investment that will add value to Uganda both economically and socially.
